Thomatis Creek
Crimson LakeThomatis Creek is the route Ted Conkaffey and Amanda Pharrell take from a dock into open water while investigating money Jake Scully had been sending to Llewellyn Bruce. The journey carries them into a remote coastal landscape where crocodiles are visible along the banks and the terrain itself demands caution.
The Waterway and Its Surroundings
The pair begin at a dock on Thomatis Creek, where Amanda boards a flat-bottomed airboat and Ted hires it from a weathered dockman. Ted pilots the boat along the creek until it opens onto the water. As they pass, crocodiles slide from the banks, their eyes briefly visible above the surface before they sink away, leaving only bubbles. The creek is therefore not merely a route across the landscape: its wildlife makes the passage physically risky.
The Journey Beyond the Creek
After travelling across the open water, they reach another dock in an inlet south-west of their starting point, which Ted guesses is near Yarrabah. Beyond it, waves break around Rocky Island Reef, while seagulls rise from cliffs sheltering the bay. Amanda moves quickly into the undergrowth, and Ted has to jog to keep up. Her warning to stay on the trail because they are in crocodile country makes the hazards of the shore an immediate part of their progress on foot as well as by boat.
Role in the Investigation
The trip follows Ted’s discovery that Jake had frequently sent money to Llewellyn Bruce. Amanda’s lack of surprise at the name and her immediate decision to ride to the creek suggest that she already knows something about their destination; when Ted asks, she distinguishes knowing of Bruce from knowing him personally. Thomatis Creek thus marks a transition from a financial lead to a physical pursuit into unfamiliar terrain. Its waterways and crocodile-inhabited banks shape how the investigators travel, while the move from creek to open sea and then into the undergrowth gives the inquiry a steadily more exposed setting.
